The Idea

To be on the catwalk as a model, to hear the clicking of the cameras and to be lit by the lightning of their flashlights is the dream of many young girls and women.

Renate Weidner and Ralph Büsing, both affected by a handicap themselves, and for more than 20 years active in work with the disabled, were sitting in an ice-cream parlor discussing about how women in a wheelchair are dealing with these dreams. Without imagining what an avalanche they set rolling, they arranged Germany’s first modeling contest for women in a wheelchair.

This idea has become an event, which has offered the first opportunity to many women in a wheelchair, to approach to themselves in their role as a female. Some of them had already reduced themselves to their wheelchair. It was a completely new experience to these women to engage themselves with their own bodies, with their own outer appearances, without dealing with medical or therapeutic concerns.

The environment, the audience and the media reacted with an unknown openness and enthusiasm, so that beauties in motion in its outgoing impact is a splendid contribution to the process of approaching each other, people with and without a handicap.
